Photo Illustration Project: Album Cover

For this project, we were tasked with designing a photo illustration, and I chose to recreate an album cover. I selected the most recent album from one of my favorite artists Mitski to redesign, titled “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We.” I was inspired by the album title to use a photo of a forest that looks barren and “inhospitable,” and then I found a picture of Mitski looking distressed, and thought it tied in nicely with the “so are we”. A new tool I learned how to use in this project was how to layer textured photos and use the blending options in Photoshop, such as Color Burn and Dissolve. My biggest challenge with this assignment was incorporating a photo I had taken into the design. I struggled to find something that fits with the dreariness of the design until I saw the wilting flowers in my room. I like how the wilting flowers add to the bleak and depressing aura and that their warm color palate ties in with the red typography.
